Rabea Benhalim is an Associate Professor at the University of Colorado
Law School who focuses her research on comparative Jewish and Islamic law in the modern era. Professor Benhalim will be reflecting on her insights as a Muslim scholar who studies Halakha. Her research focuses on how religious minorities navigate religious law within secular
legal systems. Topics explored will include the historical influence
of Jewish and Muslim legal scholars on each other; how religious law
maintains relevancy within changed circumstances; and the impact on
law of religious people living as a minority or majority population.
Professor Benhalim's prior work experience as a lawyer and policy
expert includes positions at the Brookings Institution, Mayer Brown
LLP, Maersk Oil, and the Carter Center. She holds a J.D. from the
University of Texas, an L.L.M. from the University of Wisconsin Law
School, a Master of Public Policy Degree from the University of
Michigan, and a B.A. from the University of Texas at Dallas. She is a
Ph.D. candidate in Islamic Studies at the University of Texas at Austin.
