b.1856 in Russia, Aharon David Gordon's essays are not read in the usual sense.

Written or delivered after his arrival in Palestine in 1904, I hear the 48-64 y/o Aliyah's words (d. 1922) as if they were symphonic and in beautiful harmony. I find his expressions tonal, full of vibrant intensity, and perhaps, to his audience, pointed them toward a new way to live as Jews. Reading him from a modern standpoint, his meanings can feel obscure because they are Talmudically derivative and yet poignantly still aligned with modern-day concepts of earth and nature, authenticity and wholeness, and inspiration and pragmatism.
