Over the course of the past decade Basya Schechter (Of Pharoah's Daughter) and Rabbi Shaul Magid have developed a new liturgical formula for Kabbalat Shabbat at the Fire Island synagogue using Appalachian and old-time tunes as their musical template. In some cases, the tunes came from Ireland or Scotland through the Canadian provinces to the mountains in the mid-Atlantic. They make them “talk Jewish” and hope to surprise, inspire and make us think with our feet and dance with our minds.
