Shmita, or release, refers to a year long land sabbatical, and forgiving of loans.
This year-long class will look at traditional sources of shmita from Torah to Tannaim. We will be studying shmita's spiritual, socioeconomic, and practical aspects. Facilitators listed below:

January 26 with Rabbi Charna Rosenholtz
Rabbi Avraham Isaac Kook was the first Chief Rabbi of modern Israel. One of his duties was to assess how the country would deal with shmita practices. He believed shmitah was a sign for all time that could assist in the renewal and rectification of the world, including promoting social justice and religious expression.  In this session we explore his thoughts and the place shmitah can provide in tikkun olam.

February 16 with Becca Gan Levy (Farmer Becca)
The Shmita year prescribes that farmers do not till the land and what grows on its own is open to any animal or human. Becca Gan Levy, "Farmer Becca," will lead a discussion on the kinds of food systems that may arise in a year of shmita.

March 30 with Ed Kass
Spiritual Aspects of Shmita

April 27: Stacey Aviva Flint and Allen Katz

May 25: Rabbi Marc
June 22: Jason Blau
