New Building “Placemaking” -
We Need Your Ideas!

There are now two ways to contribute your ideas. Online or in-person at Bonai!

What is Placemaking?

The vision for the new building is more than a collection of spaces and rooms. It is of a building filled with moments, with features that make it a uniquely Jewish, uniquely Bonai Shalom space. It is of a building that itself acts as an opportunity for moments of inspiration, teaching, connection, and community-building. We call these moments “Placemaking”. These moments do not add square footage to the building, but rather soul and personality. They can be quotes, Judaica, art or sculptural pieces, furniture, stained glass windows, building materials that evoke a particular feeling, etc.

Two examples to help you think about what Placemaking Ideas could be:

Lord Rabbi Jonathan Sacks, in his commentary “From Despair to Hope”, in his book Covenant & Conversation states:

“To be a Jew is to seek to make a difference, to change lives for the better, to heal some of the scars of our fractured world.”

Imagine this quote displayed prominently on an exterior wall in the Entry Courtyard you pass through on your way into the new building.

What if, as a means to build community by sharing our Jewish journey stories, we were to have a museum type display case in the Community Court where members could take turns displaying family Judaica with the stories about the pieces and their origins or familial significance.

Why is Placemaking Important?

Placemaking is what will help ensure that the new building is not just a collection of spaces and rooms; but, a soulful, joyful reflection of our community and our collective mission and purpose as a synagogue community.

Placemaking Timeline:

December-January: Placemaking Idea Generation

February: Review & Prioritize Ideas as Community

March-April: Integrate priority Placemaking Ideas into new building design

What ideas do you have? Now is the time to share your ideas, so that the new building will be a soulful, joyful reflection of our community and our collective mission and purpose.

Please contribute your ideas online (click here) or in-person at Bonai Shalom.

NEW INFORMATION

COMMUNICATION

On July 13 and 14, we will have Architects from Finegold Alexander in Boulder to listen to our community and better understand our needs for a new synagogue building on the Boulder Jewish Commons.

Specific Meeting Opportunities
The Architects would like to have a conversation with you through various visioning sessions on July 13th. You can join in person in the sanctuary at Bonai Shalom or by Zoom by registering in advance here.

They have furnished the following questions to think about and consider before the meeting:

Thought Questions

1. How do you feel about your current synagogue building from a qualitative standpoint?
2. What do you like the best about your current building and site? What do you like the least?
3. How does your building express (or not) who you are as a community? What message would you like your new building/site to send?
4. Have you seen examples of other spaces or buildings (not necessarily religious) that speak to you, and if so, why?
5. Pick five words to describe how you want to feel in and about your new synagogue.
6. How would you like your building to relate to its site?
7. How would you like to engage with the outdoors in your new facility?
